37.         School term dates for the 2024/2025 school year [10.04]

The Executive Member considered a report that sought approval of the attached school term dates for schools for whom the City of York Council (CYC) is the employer, for the school year beginning in September 2024.

The School Admissions Manager outlined the report noting that consideration had been given to the term dates set by other local authorities and that previously, York had mirrored the dates set by North Yorkshire County Council and East Riding of Yorkshire Council. She explained that due to the late Easter break in 2025, two sets of draft dates had been developed. Annex A followed regional principles as discussed in the Yorkshire and Humber Admissions Group.  Annex B moved the Easter and February half term holidays forward one week, to increase the Summer first half term from 19 to 23 days.  She noted that all CYC schools and MATs were consulted on the annexes and two schools supported Annex B. She added that North Yorkshire County Council and East Riding of Yorkshire Council used the term dates as set out in Annex B.

The Executive Member thanked the School Admissions Manager for her report. In response to questions from the Executive Member, she explained that:

·        The York school term dates could not sync with Leeds City Council and North Yorkshire County Council and East Riding of Yorkshire Council and that the priority was use immediate neighbouring local authority dates.

·        Multi Academy Trusts (MATs) could deviate from the set term dates but the council have good relationships with the MATs in York who continue to follow the term dates agreed. The MATs could also set their own training days.

The Executive Member then;

Resolved: That approval be given to the term dates as in Annex B to the published report for the 2024-2025 school year.

Reason:     To meet the statutory requirements of legislation including the Education Act 2002, (Section 32), and other related legislation.
